Medical Rotators

Who Counts as a Medical Rotator?

Summary

This elective is designed to advance knowledge in infectious diseases by providing a strong foundation of knowledge. By the end of the rotation, our aim is for the rotator to become proficient in managing some infectious diseases which are commonly encountered in hospital and outpatient settings.

Residents rotating on the inpatient infectious diseases consult service(s) will participate in the evaluation and management of patients with a broad spectrum of infectious diseases. Under the supervision of infectious diseases faculty and fellows, residents will evaluate new consultations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, and follow patients longitudinally during their hospitalization. Residents will typically evaluate up to three new consults per day and participate in the ongoing care of previously seen patients.

Rotators will encounter a wide range of infectious syndromes across diverse patient populations, including infections in surgical patients, solid organ and stem cell transplant recipients, critically ill patients, obstetric/gynecologic patients, hematology-oncology patients, general medicine patients, and individuals with HIV or other immunocompromising conditions.

This elective is typically scheduled in two-week blocks, with residents having the option to complete up to four weeks of Infectious Diseases elective time. Rotators may select one or two consult services (teams) depending on availability and educational goals (team descriptions are further down).

For more details, please review the Rotator Goals & Objectives PDF. Our goals and objectives are organized according to the six ACGME core competencies.

Please contact the administrative coordinator if you are interested in rotating at the VA.

Each team at UF Health/Shands primarily cares for patients referred by specific consulting specialties (e.g., transplant, surgery, oncology, general medicine, and critical care). A detailed description of each consult service and the patient populations served is provided below.

Both the ID services at UF Health Shands Hospital and the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center are run by the on-service ID attendings on each team, and there is usually an ID fellow on Teams A, B, and the VA Service.
