The Infectious Diseases Division hosts 2 Division conferences (Case Management Conference and ID Grand Rounds), 2 combined conferences (BMID/IDGM and ID/Chest Radiology), and 3 Fellow-specific conferences (Fellows’ Orientation BootCamp, Fellows’ Wednesday Conferences and Fellows’ Board Review), and participates in the Infection Prevention and Control Committee (IPCC) Conferences and Microbiology Plate Rounds.
Fellows are expected to attend weekly didactics, and faculty frequently attend these as well.
If you are interested in attending or speaking at our ID Conferences or associated conferences, please email idfellowship@medicine.ufl.edu.
Case Management
At this conference, our ID Fellows present cases they think are important for others to learn from, and work with ID faculty attendings to produce a presentation and discussion. This includes cases which are challenging to diagnose or manage.
These conferences are typically held the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesdays from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm EST throughout the year, except during July & August, in our ID Conference Room (Dental Building Room D2-15).
Infectious Disease Grand Rounds (IDGR)
These are in-depth topic coverage presentations intended to ensure our fellows/faculty cover the IDSA Curriculum recommendations over the course of 2 years and are up-to-date on infectious disease issues.
These conferences are held nearly each Friday from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EST throughout the year, except during July & August, in our ID Conference Room (Dental Building Room D2-15).
Topics which will be covered this year at IDGR Presentations:
- Eye Infections
- Endemic Fungal Infections
- OPAT
- ID Fellow Research Updates
- HIV Research Updates
- Intestinal Health and Infectious Colitis Research Updates
- HIV Resources
- Infections in IV Drug Users
- Mid-Cycle, Promotion, & Tenure
- New and Emerging Treatments for HIV
- Pediatric ID
- …and more forthcoming
Combined Microbiology and ID Conference (BMID/IDGM)
This is a monthly conference that is jointly prepared by trainees from both the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and the Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Medicine in the Department of Medicine. The conference usually takes place on the 4th Tuesday of the month from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm EST throughout the year except for in July & August, in the Communicore Lecture Halls.
There are two sections to the conference:
- The ID Fellow presents a clinical case and management of an infectious process (with differential diagnosis).
- A graduate student (who is part of the T32 training grant) covers a basic science/translational science journal article which pertains to the infectious process discussed in the preceding part of the conference. This offers the two areas of expertise to come together for a clinical case and scientific discussion, which allows for both collegiality and potential scientific collaboration.

Fellows’ Wednesday Conferences
These conferences are meant to cover a variety of topics for the Fellows and help prepare them for their exams. The topics alternate each week, and include: Journal Club; Case Simulation; Treatment Guidelines; & NTM/Complex Cases. These occur nearly every Wednesday of the month (except the last Wednesday of the month), throughout the year from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EST, except during July & August, in our ID Conference Room (Dental Building Room D2-15).
Fellows’ Board Review
These conferences are meant to cover a variety of board topics for the Fellows and help prepare them for their board exam. Faculty sometimes participate to cover particular topics. These occur nearly every Thursday of the month throughout the year from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm EST, except during July & August, in our ID Conference Room (Dental Building Room D2-15).
These meetings cover IPCC updates. During the meeting, one of our ID Fellows presents on an IPCC-relevant topic. These meetings occur nearly 3rd Tuesday of the month throughout the year from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EST in 1280.2LG.
MicroPlate Rounds
At this conference, our ID Fellows engage in collaborative working sessions to review active culture plates and antimicrobial susceptibility test results together in the lab. These rounds promote diagnostic stewardship, optimize patient antibiotic therapy, and strengthen clinical-laboratory communication. These meetings occur nearly every Thursday of the month throughout the year except, during July & August, from 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm EST in the Shands Microbiology Lab.
