Division of Infectious Diseases
The Infectious Disease Section has a long history of excellence. In the 1960s Dr. Leighton Cluff, Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, came as Chairman of Medicine and recruited Dr. Joseph Johnson (later became Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School), to head the division. Dr. Joseph Shands, former Editor in Chief of Infection and Immunity, served as division head, and in 1991, Dr. Frederick Southwick became the division chief. Dr. Michael Lauzardo has recently taken on the role as current division chief. The division has a strong reputation for research and clinical excellence. The faculty is also receiving among the highest evaluations as teachers.
